Major Functions of the Immune System

Our bodies are exposed to a vast number of harmful bacteria and viruses. We must be prepared to fight them off while still leaving intact the important and helpful organisms.   • Bone Marrow: Produces the body's blood cells, as well as the lymphocyte cells
  • Thymus: Produces T-cells, a member of the white blood cell group

  • Lymph Nodes: Similar to the spleen, it acts as a filter of antigens. However, the lymph nodes do so by draining fluids from the body's tissues.
Another major function of the immune system consists of B cells, T cells, Macrophages, and Leukocytes. They are responsible for seeking out the antigens in our bodies and either destroying them directly or transporting them to other cells to make antibodies.
